This enormous geode was carefully extracted from the hard basalt formations near Artigas, Uruguay. It was then masterfully prepared by the local expert craftsman to create a natural work of art. The geode itself is 53.5" tall, and it stands 71.2" tall including the custom metal display base. To truly understand the scale of this geode, our assistant warehouse supervisor Jake (6'3" tall) can be seen standing next to it.

The "rind" has been polished all the way around to show off the mineral transition layers between the rock and amethyst crystals. These crystals bear deep purple coloration and formed in association with small calcite crystals that can be found peppered throughout the geode. We can pretty much guarantee this incredible specimen will look even better in person than in the photos.

This stunning specimen includes the custom metal display stand shown in the photos. The geode measures 53.5" tall, 32" wide at its widest point and is 10.5" thick. On the stand, this specimen stands just over 71" (5'11" tall). Including the base this specimen weighs approximately 465 lbs.

While Brazil is a much more prolific producer of amethyst, the amethyst mined near Artigas, Uruguay tends to be much darker with higher quality crystals. We import our material directly from the mines in Uruguay, allowing us to offer it at better retail prices than anyone else. Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz (SiO2) that owes its violet color to natural irradiation, iron impurities, and the presence of trace elements, resulting in complex crystal lattice substitutions. It is considered a semi-precious gemstone, and just two centuries ago was considered to have a value on par with diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. The largest and best known amethyst deposits occur in southern Brazil and Uruguay, but many localities around the world produce an amazing variety of amethyst crystals and formations.
