3.4" Fluorescent Calcite Geode In Sandstone - Morocco

This is a sparkling half of a calcite crystal filled geode that's partially encapsulated in the matrix it was found in, collected from Aouli, Morocco. The calcite crystals are all beautifully formed and have a faint yellow coloration. Under UV light, the crystals fluoresce the typical orange color seen by other calcite specimens. The geode within the sandstone is 3" wide.

It comes with an acrylic display stand. The matrix has been stabilized where a crack formed between the two halves.

Calcite, CaCO3, is a carbonate mineral and the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate. The other polymorphs are the minerals aragonite and vaterite. Calcite crystals are trigonal-rhombohedral, though actual calcite rhombohedra are rare as natural crystals. However, they show a remarkable variety of habits including acute to obtuse rhombohedra, tabular forms, and prisms. Calcite exhibits several twinning types adding to the variety of observed forms. It may occur as fibrous, granular, lamellar, or compact. Cleavage is usually in three directions parallel to the rhombohedron form.
