5.6" Carnelian Agate "Flame" Sculpture

This is a vibrantly colored, carnelian agate from Madagascar which has been hand-polished into a "flame" shaped sculpture. This beautiful piece is 5.8" tall, and has rich, fiery hues of red, yellows and oranges contrasting with a milky white color. The base has been cut to allow for aesthetic presentation.

Carnelian is a semi-precious stone consisting of an orange or orange-red variety of chalcedony/agate. It's name is believed to come from the Latin word carneus, meaning 'flesh colored'. The reddish color is due to the presence of iron oxide impurities in the silica which makes up the chalcedony.

Carnelian is one of the oldest known gemstones. It was widely used in ancient Rome to make insignia and seals for imprinting on letters or important documents because hot wax does not stick to carnelian.
