4.1" Tall, Polished Jade (Nephrite) Bookends - British Colombia
This is a stunning pair of bookends made from deep green sections of jade var. nephrite. The jade was collected from the BC Jade Mine in Jade City, Canada. The bookends have been polished on all faces including the base, however the "top" of the bookends have been left rough. Exceptional polishing work on this pair.
One bookend is 4.1" tall, 3.6" wide and weighs about 3.5 lbs. The other bookend is 3.8" tall, 3.6" wide and weighs about 3.1 lbs. These bookends aren't cut at perfect 90 degree angles on all sides, resulting in a slightly slanted angle along some polished faces. However, this doesn't affect their ability to hold books up properly.
Jade City is a small town located in the Cassiar Mountain Range of northern British Colombia, Canada, just south of the Yukon Border. The town is small and has a population of about 35 people, most of which are employed by the Bunce family that runs the jade industry of Jade City. For over 40 years, this same family has been working these mountains, extracting nephrite jade and cutting/polishing the specimens in Jade City. The jade is then shipped all across the world in both its rough and polished form. In fact, roughly 90% of the jade on the world market is collected and supplied from northern British Columbia.
Much of the jade mined from the Cassier Mountains is processed in the tiny town of Jade City, BC
The popularity of the nephrite jade from this location resulted in Discovery Canada starting a reality tv show known as Jade Fever. This show follows this family and their mining efforts through the Cassiar Mountain Range.
Jade is a silicate mineral that is best known for its green varieties, the most common of which are jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is a variety of jade that's primarily composed of silicon, calcium and magnesium while nephrite contains silicon, sodium and aluminum. For thousands of years, jade has been used for ornamental purposes and as tools due to its relative strength and durability.
Washington state has now joined over a dozen other states to put in place “shelter in place” or “stay at home” orders. While we agree this is the correct course of action, it will have a substantial impact on our business. It effectively shuts down much of our company for several weeks.
We will continue taking orders on our website and we will have a single staff member at our warehouse to facilitate shipping of these new orders. Depending on the order volume this may mean that we do experience some shipping delays, particularly with large or fragile items that require more packaging time.
These shutdowns are particularly devastating to all small businesses who don’t have significant cash reserves and rely on constant cash flow to pay their fixed expenses (payroll, rent, loan payments, etc) We hope that you will continue to support us and satisfy your fossil fix during these trying times.
