3.2" Green Epidote, Quartz and Byssolite Association - Morocco

This is a cluster of dark green epidote crystals in bow tie and fan shaped aggregates, clustered on a quartz encrusted matrix. When viewing closely between these crystals, small fibrous, olive-green clusters of byssolite can be found. The specimen was collected at Imilchil in the Er Rachidia Province of Morocco.

Epidote is a green, silicate mineral that is commonly found in regionally metamorphosed rocks. It often forms lustrous, elongated and interconnected crystals that are highly coveted by collectors. While nearly all epidote is green it may take on many different shades and tones from yellowish to deep green.

Silicon Dioxide, also know as SiO2 or Quartz, is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust. Quartz crystals generally grow in silica-rich, hot watery solutions called hydrothermal environments, at temperatures between 100°C and 450°C, and usually under very high pressure. Quartz veins are formed when open fissures are filled with hot water during the closing stages of mountains forming, and can be hundreds of millions of years old.
