5.5" Pennsylvanian Fossil Fern (Sphenopteris) Plate - Kentucky

This is a fossil fern (Sphenopteris) plate, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. It is two stalks with pinnules (branch of leaflets). This specimen is well preserved with individual lobes visible. Venation is visible under magnification. The reverse has a well preserved section of the horsetail like Calamites. This is an amazing specimen.

Sphenopteris is genus of seed ferns, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
