Large 3.01" Tyrannosaur (Daspletosaurus) Tooth - Montana

This is a excellent, 3.01" Tyrannosaur tooth (Likely Daspletosaurus) from the Two Medicine Formation (Judith River Group) of Montana. This formation is approximately 70 million years old, or about 5 million years old than the Hell Creek Formation which produces T-Rex.

This large tooth Tyrannosaur tooth with very nice enamel preservation and visible serrations. Less than 1% of the teeth I get from this location exceed 3 inches. There is very little wear from the tip. Most of the serrations are present on the inner edge while they are little more worn on the outer.

Like most large teeth it was found fragmented in the ground, so it had to be put back together. There are several repaired cracks along with gap fill restoration in the cracks.

There are three described Tyrannosaurs from the Two Medicine Formation (Judith River Group), Albertosaurus, Gorgosaurus and Daspletosaurus. Research done on teeth from these three Tyrannosaurs has concluded that isolated teeth are statistically impossible to assign to a specific genre because they are so similar. But, given the large size of this tooth, there is a high probability that it belongs to the larger of the three types, Daspletosaurus.
