Large 2.49" Tyrannosaur Tooth - Montana

This is a great 2.49" Tyrannosaurid tooth from the Two Medicine Formation (Judith River Group) of Montana. This formation is approximately 70 million years old, or about 5 million years old than the Hell Creek Formation which produces T-Rex.

The enamel preservation on this large tooth is generally pretty good on one with just some root etchings in the middle. There is some bleaching due to exposure on the reverse side. Minimal feeding wear to the tip. The inner serrations are in excellent shape other than were there was a chip in the middle of the tooth. Outer serrations are pretty worn. There is one crack repair about 1/3 of the way from the tip, and a bit of restoration where a chip was missing on the inner edge of the tooth in the crack. A fine Tyrannosaur tooth overall.

There are three described Tyrannosaurs from the Two Medicine Formation (Judith River Group), Albertosaurus, Gorgosaurus and Daspletosaurus. Research done on teeth from these three Tyrannosaurs has concluded that isolated teeth are statistically impossible to assign to a specific genre because they are so similar. I've linked to the research paper below.
