Large, 2.1" Kolihapeltis Trilobite - Rare Species

This is a beautiful, example of a rare, spiny trilobite from Morocco, Kolihapeltis rabatensis. It's 2.1" long and laid out perfectly prone with it's long, sweeping spines prepared free of the surrounding limestone. There is about 10% shell restoration on this specimen, mostly on the left side of the head and along the right hand side of the thorax.

A very impressive specimen.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet with over 25k described species, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to a hard exoskeleton (shell), they left a excellent fossil record.
