Fossil Sand Dollar (Heliophora) Cluster - Boujdour, Morocco

 
 
This is a cluster of fossil sand dollars collected near Boujdour, Morocco. Most of, if not all of these echinoderms appear to be of the genus Heliophora. Heliophora is a genus of small sand dollars belonging to the family Rotulidae which went extinct during the Pliocene. Thee genus has distinctive indentations along the edge of the test (body), but the extent and depth of these can very remarkably between individual specimens. In the case of these specimens the indentations are not very pronounced.

There are at least two dozen fossil sand dollars in this cluster which stand about 5.2" tall.
