7.6" Cretaceous Ammonite (Mammites) Fossil with Metal Stand - Morocco

This is a 7.6" wide, Late Cretaceous ammonite (Mammites sp.) collected near Goulmima, Morocco. These ammonites have rows of raised bumps or nodes around their outer surface.

This ammonite comes with the pictured custom metal display stand. When on the stand, this specimen is about 13" tall.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
