7.2" Pennsylvanian Fossil Horsetail (Asterophyllites) - Kentucky

This is a 7.2" fossil horsetail (Asterophyllites equisetiformis), from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This specimen is a large stalk of Asterophyllites and a number of whorls (circular organized leaves). There are a number of smaller stalks and these whorls in this very interesting and very well preserved example.

Asterophyllites is a genus of the family Calamitaceae, a jointed-stemmed plant, closely related to modern horsetails.
