6.7" Placenticeras meeki Ammonite - Opalescent Shell

This is a large and stunning example of Placenticeras meeki from the Pierre Shale of South Dakota. It's 6 3/4 inches wide and has a very iridescent shell which shines with hues of reds, pinks and greens when the light hits it from the right angle. The concretion in which it was found has been prepared so that it creates a free-standing display to show off this impressive ammonite.

These ammonites are found in hard concretions, or balls of rock which form around the fossil. These concretions are split open to reveal the ammonites which then must be expertly prepared from the surrounding rock, a very time consuming task requiring a lot of skill
