4.2" Plate of Gastropod (Cyclonema) Fossils - Ohio
This is a nice multiple plate of three Ordovician aged gastropod (Cyclonema bilix) fossils from the Arnheim Formation of Ohio. Mollusk shells are typically composed of a phosphatic substance called Aragonite. Unfortunately Aragonite does not preserve well in the Cincinnatian, so most gastropod fossils are internal molds, unlike this specimen. This piece has been cleaned under microscope using air abrasives.
Two of the gastropods appear to have been removed from the rock, cleaned and then remounted back to the rock. The rock contains a variety of other marine fossil fragments. It comes with an acrylic display stand.

Gastropods, or snails, have been around since the Late Cambrian period. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. There are 611 known families of gastropods, of which 202 families are extinct and appear only in the fossil record.
