3" Silurian Bryozoan Fossil Plate - New York

This is a plate of Silurian-aged bryozoan fossils. The specimen comes from the Rochester Shale near Middleport, New York. These bryozoans bear black preservation that contrasts well against the grey shale.

Comes with an acrylic display stand. There is a repaired crack through the rock.

Bryozoans are microscopic aquatic invertebrates that live in colonies, forming skeletal structures similar to corals. Each skeletal structure has a form unique to each particular species. The individual byrozoans forming these colonies are fileter feeders called zooids, straining nutrients from the surrounding water.
