3.8" Jurassic Ammonite (Macrocephalites) Fossil - France

This is a very beautiful, 3.8" wide Macrocephalites sp. ammonite from a location nears Tours, France. This Jurassic aged ammonite has been mostly prepped free from the rock that it was found in, however a large section of rock has been left attached and cut flat for presentation purposes. There are small unidentified fossil bivalves and ammonites scattered throughout the rock.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
