13" Hakelia Fossil Fish - Hjoula, Lebanon

 
 
 
This is a very inflated specimen of a rare Hakelia laticauda from the Upper Cretaceous marine deposits near Hjoula, Lebanon. It's 13 inches in length is near maximum length for the species and shows great detail including scales, fins and bone structure. It's located on a thick slab of limestone matrxi that has a few repaired cracks running through it. Hakelia is considered one of the rarer fish found in the quarries.

The Upper Cretaceous (98-95 million year old), Lebonese lagerstätten yields some of the most exquisitely preserved fossil fish in the world. Over 80 genre are currently described, with many more still awaiting description. These beautiful fossils have been quarried near Byblos, Lebanon for well over a century and include sharks, rays, shrimp, ray-finned fishes and more.
