3.7" Pennsylvanian Fossil Fern Plate - Kentucky

This is a two fossil seed ferns, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This specimen contains a 1.8" pinnule (branch of leaflets) of Neuropteris and a 1.1" sphenopteris pinnule. They all come from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.

Neuropteris and Sphenopteris are genera of seed ferns, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.

Comes with an acrylic display stand.
